For several millennia this was the only and best way to introduce solids into a baby in its first few weeks of life.
The reason why it was done is obvious.
It was the only way to give solids to a child without teeth.
In fact, premastication was the first form of weaning a child into solids.
Though we might think it would completely fade away, that is not so.
It keeps ongoing in all Continents, including Europe and North America. But this is done by people that have migrated from countries where this practice still exists.
The reason why this practice continues is not so simple:
While there are significant socio-economical differences between Continents, and often within them, the practice will carry on.
For me, though, I would prefer it did not continue because, as a society, we have evolved so much.
I respect the reasons behind it and understand why it persists.
